The Family Histories Podcast - 'The Place' with Dr. Angela Buckley, Dr. Nick Barratt, and Christine Payne (S07EP09)

In this special episode of The Family Histories Podcast, we’re marking our 50th guest episode, with a twist – this time we have 3 guests, and we’re recording in collaboration with the Society of Genealogists as part of the All About That Place 2024 online event, which runs from 27th September through to 6th October 2024.

If you’d like to take part in All About The Place 2024, it runs online from 27th September – 6th October 2024.

Find out how you can take part and enjoy 140 talks on family and local history.

The Interview – Dr Angela Buckley

Victorian Crime, Policing, and Forensic history author Dr Angela Buckley tells Andrew about how it was a crime in her own family history committed by her 3x Great Grandfather John Dawson – that got her hooked on researching the criminal activities of others and the history of policing. She explains how she uses sources to help her to research for her investigative crime books, and reveals her favourite sleuths.

The Life Story – Erica Doreen Fuller with Dr Nick Barratt

It’s now the turn of Dr Nick Barratt – genealogist, author, Medievalist, and broadcaster (The House Detectives, House Histories, and Who Do You Think You Are?). Nick tells Andrew about a puzzle involving his grandmother Erica Doreen Fuller… who was born illegitimately, somewhere outside the UK, and was sort-of informally fostered into care to a remote farm house in Norfolk, England… but not everything is quite as it seems…

The Brick Wall – Joseph Quin with Christine Payne

It’s then the turn of family and social historian Christine Payne, who was the winner of the All About That Place 2024 competition, organised via the All About That Place Facebook Page, to appear on this episode.

Christine’s brick wall is the birth and death of her Great Grandfather Joseph Quin. He is known to have handed himself in to Brixton Prison in London in 1896, where he confessed to being a bigamist. However, it’s not this part that is causing a stubborn brick wall to appear, as Christine knows that he serves 4 days of hard labour.

Christine is trying to find out;

  • Why did he confess?
  • What happened to Joseph Quin after his prison term?
  • Where did Joseph Quin die?

If you think that you can help Christine with a research idea or clue, then you can send her a message at christinepayne02@gmail.com, or alternatively you can use our contact form and we’ll pass it along to her.

In the meantime, Andrew offers Christine some help, but he has a secret to reveal first…
